Partnering with Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art, and sponsored by Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Laurel Arts initiated “Making Marks 2022” with 10 clients and two caseworkers from Cornerstone Community Services, Somerset, PA.
This 12-day residency program reflected Laurel Arts mission, “Arts for Everyone”, and expanded art outreach in our community.
Six mentor artists encouraged the participants to explore alternative ways of creating art by producing marks with a variety of materials and prompts. The clients’ free, expressive lines, textures, colors, and patterning became abstract marks, open to a variety of interpretations.
The goal of the project was to encourage the participants to engage in :
- Experimental art activities
- Imaginative play with materials
- Improvisation
- Uninhibited, expressive responses
- Unblocked-art anxieties
- Mindful attention to art processes with judgement
- Communication using art terminology
The “Making Marks” program contributes to the health and pleasure of local adults, and promotes their confidence and appreciation for personal, artistic self-expression.

This calendar is available for local pick up at the Philip Dressler Center for the Arts located at 214 S. Harrison Ave, Somerset PA. Our hours are Monday – Thursday 11AM – 6PM and Saturday 10AM – 2PM.
