SUMMARY:Wool Braided Rug Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Instructor Lisa Meyers will be offering another one of her beautiful rug making classes this spring. This is a class that teaches a machine free\, gadget free\, ancient method of making braided rugs. Braided rugs and other homemade rugs are ultimate recycling projects. Going back to prehistory\, mankind has always recycled. These rugs\, when cared for properly\, become heirlooms. Learn all the techniques and problem solving skills needed to create a quality rug. Since this is a craft\, the skills will be developed in each student according to their needs. The “Art” part is in the selection of color combinations.\nThe first lesson is 1 hour or so to go over all the proper materials\, needles\, thread\, thimble\, scissors and a lesson on color theory to help you personalize your project. No need to bring anything unless you want to make sure it is correct. Handouts are given with each night’s lessons. This is a very important and can not be missed. There will be plenty of time for questions.\n***Please do not buy any materials ahead of this lesson. After the information session in the first week\, students will be responsible for purchasing any materials needed for the project. DESCRIPTION:Mosaics for Beginners is a class for those who are interested in learning how to create art by mortaring or gluing pieces of tesserae (material) onto another object or stubstrate. We will\ndiscuss what “mosaics” are and view many different styles and methods of mosaics. Students will be introduced to the classic mosaic hammer and hardie in order to cut local materials such as sandstone\, limestone\, and coal as well as reclaimed materials such as pottery and glass. Students will also learn to use tile snips as well as glass snips. Students will even be introduced to imported Italian smalti glass that is seen on cathedrals throughout the world. The class will cover how to mix mortar and epoxy\, how to build a substate\, and how to apply tesserae in\nflowing lines of andamento (movement).\nClass takes place for 8 weeks on Wednesdays; March 6\, 13\, 20\, 27\, April 3\, 10\, 17\, 24 at 6pm to 8pm at 601 Georgian Place\, Somerset.\nThe cost for the workshop is $96 nonmembers/$76.80 members plus a $25 materials fee payable to Laurel Arts.\nPre-registration is required. SUMMARY:Mosaics Workshop for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Mosaics for Beginners is a class for those who are interested in learning how to create art by mortaring or gluing pieces of tesserae (material) onto another object or stubstrate. We will\ndiscuss what “mosaics” are and view many different styles and methods of mosaics. Students will be introduced to the classic mosaic hammer and hardie in order to cut local materials such as sandstone\, limestone\, and coal as well as reclaimed materials such as pottery and glass. Students will also learn to use tile snips as well as glass snips. Students will even be introduced to imported Italian smalti glass that is seen on cathedrals throughout the world. The class will cover how to mix mortar and epoxy\, how to build a substate\, and how to apply tesserae in\nflowing lines of andamento (movement).\nClass takes place for 8 weeks on Wednesdays; March 6\, 13\, 20\, 27\, April 3\, 10\, 17\, 24 at 6pm to 8pm at 601 Georgian Place\, Somerset.\nThe cost for the workshop is $96 nonmembers/$76.80 members plus a $25 materials fee payable to Laurel Arts.\nPre-registration is required. DESCRIPTION:During this all day work shop\, participants will learn paper making from self taught paper maker Katy DeMent www.thepaperlady.com. Students will have a crash course in building equipment and making pulps from plants and recycled fibers\, while creating handmade paper sheets with a variety of embellishments like color\, texture and collage. If you attended a class before with Katy\, please feel free to come and build on your skills.\nHere is what the day’s schedule will look like:\n1. 10am Introduction to paper making; share examples\, brief history of communication and the history of paper making\, prep materials\n2. 10:30am Do you want to make personal molds to take home for\nfuture paper making ? (materials cost $35.00 each for this or we just use mine)\n3. 11:00am Making and dyeing pulps from natural and reclaimed materials and fibers\, share examples of plant fiber varieties\n4. 12:00pm sheet forming with texture\, color and random inclusions\n5.
