Scholarship Information

The Dorothy B. Dressler Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was established to provide opportunities to area residents with financial need to participate in the many art programs offered by Laurel Arts.  It honors Dorothy B. Dressler, who supported Laurel Arts and the arts in Somerset County for over three decades.  Dressler was a widow who had expressed interest in offering her home as a center for the arts as a memorial tribute to her husband, Philip d’huc Dressler.

Applications can be picked up at The Philip Dressler Center for the Arts and The Education & Dance Center.

The scholarship is funded by generous community support and by Laurel Arts’ Annual Golf Tournament. To make a contribution to the Dorothy B. Dressler Scholarship Fund or to find out more about the Annual Golf Tournament, call 814-443-2433.

The Myron and Inez Fetterolf Award for Excellence in the Arts

This award is funded by the Donald & Linda Fetterolf Foundation. The scholarship was established in memory of Myron & Inex Fetterolf, who were instrumental in the start of Laurel Arts.

The award recognizes a high school senior in each Somerset County school district who has excelled in a branch of the fine arts (music, dance, drama, visual arts or creative writing). Each school is asked to select a candidate who will have the opportunity to compete for one of three Fetterolf/Laurel Arts Fine Arts Scholarships in the amount of $500, $300, and $200. A diverse panel of judges will determine the winners.

The Locklin Award for Excellence in the Arts

This award was established in 2006 in memory of Robert B. Locklin, Jr., who was the Executive Director of Laurel Arts from 1988 – 1996.  Locklin held a M.A. in Music Composition and dedicated his life to music and arts education.

The Competition is open to all Somerset County High School Seniors who are continuing on to further education and currently participate in the Arts (music, dance, drama, visual arts or creative writing). Any student meeting the criteria may apply for the scholarship by completing an application form, essay, and obtaining a letter of recommendation from the teacher in his or her art discipline. Numerous students from the same school can apply.

Finalists will be selected based on the completed application packet including the application, essay, and letter of recommendation. If selected as a finalist, the student will be contacted by Laurel Arts and given a time to compete for the Locklin Award of $500. Applications can be picked up at The Philip Dressler Center for the Arts, 214 South Harrison Avenue or your school guidance office.

Pre-K Scholarship Organization

Laurel Arts was approved as a Pre-K Scholarship Organization in the Spring of 2009 by the PA Department of Community and Economic Development. The program is funded by The Education Improvement Tax Credit Program. Businesses can apply for tax credits.  If approved, they can then make a contribution to the Laurel Arts for the PKSO program. In order to be considered for tax credits, businesses must apply on or after July 1st.  For more information, please contact Michael Knecht, Executive Director of Laurel Arts.

The Laurel Arts PKSO program provided scholarships for 53 students to attend Laurel Arts’ Studio Kids Pre-School, Little Peoples Learning Center and the Ready Steps Pre-School during the 2009-2010 school year. Registration for Laurel Arts’ Studio Kids Pre-School 2010-2011 school year will take place in late April at The Education & Dance Center, 601 Georgian Place, Somerset. Applications for the PKSO program can be picked up at that time.
