Summer Camps
Policies:
Laurel Arts accepts master card, visa, checks and cash.   You may register via phone or feel free to mail us your registration for a class along with your payment.  just note the class title on the memo line of your check to assist us.




Classes that do not have the minimum number of students registered will be canceled.   Please try to register at least one week prior to the start of the class. 


Laurel Arts' members receive a 20% on classes and workshops.  if you would like to receive information about Laurel Arts membership, call us at (814) 443-2433 or stop by the art center.  Any of the staff will be happy to talk with you.

If schools are on a 2 hour delay, all classes before 12:00 noon will be canceled.  If schools are canceled, all classes for that day will be canceled.  If you are in doubt, feel free to call Laurel Arts at 443-2433.

Intro to Pottery
(2-week session)

Who doesn't want to create and design their own pottery?  In this class, students will learn the basics while hand building and decorating  their own pottery.  The following session, they will come back  to apply glaze for the final firing.  Don't miss this hands on pottery experience!!

Dragonology

Based on the Dragonology book series, we'll learn tricks to track and tame these beasts, including obscure spells of dragon origin.  Create dragon art banners, dragon tooth necklaces and diaries full of folklore and facts about this mythological creature!

The Boy with Paper Wings

What if you were stuck in your bed with a pain in your head?  You'd make paper airplanes of course!  In this class, we'll learn to make a variety of paper airplanes and paper art, just like the character Paul did in the book The Boy with Paper Wings.  Read about  this imaginative boy's adventures and learn the ancient art of origami.

Mexican Soup Fiesta

Join us in the Laurel Arts kitchen for a class with spicy flair!!  Learn to make three traditional Mexican soups -- perfect for fall meals.  Create heary Albondigas (meatball) soup, Pozole (pork & hominy) soup & the ever-popular Chicken Tortilla soup. Discover how to use a variety of chilies in our cooking  & sample all the flavors for this delicious class.  Take home recipes included.

Potpourri of Poetry
(poetry writing workshop)

In this hour & a half workshop, we will be writing & discusssing varoius forms of poetry.  We will be doing several poetry related exercies to improve students understanding of poetry & how to craft a poem.  Taught by Barbara Purbaugh, who is currently an instructor at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College & Allegany College of Maryland.  Visit her website at www.barbarapurbaugh.com for more details.

2-Week, Crash-Course Piano Workshop

Pressed for time?  Always wanted to play the piano?  A 2-week workshop designed for two hours each Saturday--learn from a classical, yet upbeat piano instructor in a comfortable & alternative environment.  Bring a friend -- there will be two students per session.  If you need a piano partner, we'll pair you up with one!   This is a perfect opportutnity to "jump start" & test the beginner's skills & to see if you would like to pursue private lessons with committing to those lessons.

Joy Of Oil Painting!


A completed oil painting in just one day?  Yes, it really is possible.  You'll learn how to use the Bob Ross wet on wet technique while completing a 16 x 20 painting.  Learn some tried & true methods while designing a landscape of mountains, water, sky & clouds using basic brush & paint knife techniques.

Winter/Christmas Card Stamping

It's right around the corner & you'll want to get started early this year making your own Christmas cards.  Come to this class to create your own Christmas designs using  a variety of stamps.  You'll also get to make your own cardinal card or ornament.

Trip Around the World
Quilting Class


Make your own family heirloom quilt!  This class is for quilting beginners that have some sewing experience.  You will make your own traditional design, strip pieced & finished queen size quilt. 

Instructor:  Peggy Black

Dates:  Mondays, Sept. 29 to Oct. 27, 2008 (There is a 1 week break Oct. 13 to work on your quilt at home.)

Time:  6 to 8 p.m.

Cost:  $38.40 Members / $48.00 Non-members

Material Fee: Fabric Kit $94.50  (This includes fabrics for top & binding.  Please order kits when registering for class.  Kits need must be picked up & paid for before class begins so fabrics are washed & pressed prior to the first class.  If you opt to use your own fabrics, you will still need to purchase the pattern for $8.00.)

Students need to supply the following:  Sewing machine in good working condition, thread, basic sewing supplies, cutting mat, rotary cutter, cutting rulers & any other supplies you prefer while sewing.




Basic Photography

Just buy a new camera you'd like to know more about?  Maybe you'd like to get more out of the one you already have.  This class is to learn to know your camera better and improve your picture taking skills.  You'll learn about composition, rule of thirds and more.  It doesn't matter if you have digital or film, come join the fun!  Class is a four week course but also includes a fun, interactive class field trip to try out your new skills.

Advanced Photography

Aperture, shutter speed, depth of field . . . still confused??  Want to learn more about those manual settings on your camera or just take a more in-depth look at the world of photography and how we see light?  We'll do lots of  "hands on " learning in this class & apply our skills on a fun, interactive photography field trip, in addition to the regular class times.

Stained Glass


Stained glass, as an art and a craft, requires the artistic skill to conceive the design & the skills necessary to create the decorative piece.  These skills can be learned, practiced & refined in this class.  If you have always wanted to test your hand at something different & original, this is the class for you!!

Intro to Watercolor


Discover a variety of techniques and skills from washes to masking to create depth and detail in your watercolor painting. Learn how different brush types and strokes can be used to create your own work of art. We’ll look at differences in portrait and landscape painting and pigment types.

Middle-Eastern Dance
(Belly Dancing)


Learn the history of Middle-Eastern dance while you work your brain & your body.  It's great fun & you won't even know you're exercising!
