“New” Barbershop Chorus makes first appearance

The new Director of the Chorus is David Clark (aka/David Garwood.) David is well-known in the community for his years of work at the Mountain Playhouse, as a director of a number of outstanding choirs and choruses, and he also has previous experience in directing barbershop harmony singing.

The Chorus is planning for its annual show in October, and additional men are welcome to join in singing and may find it beneficial to know that everyone will be learning new music together. Chorus rehearsals are 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evenings at Grace United Methodist Church on Felgar Road in Somerset. For more information, call Stu Kreinbrook 445-5747 or Ken Halverson 442-8313.

Somerset County Artists plan summer events

Somerset County Artist Association members will enjoy their annual picnic Tuesday, July 26. If you are interested in attending, contact Bob Reed, 267-3183, for details.

The organization’s August meeting will be Tuesday, August 23 at the Dressler Center. Dorene Currie will present a program on oil painting. The group’s annual banquet will be in September, and the October meeting will be a covered dish dinner and the election of officers.

Power and Passion of Words looking for members

Do you have a passion for the written word? Does writing empower you? The Power and Passion of Words is looking for members who love writing and reading. Members are also applying for a grant from PA Project for the Arts to promote the group and its functions.

For more information, contact Sarene Friedman, 444-5859. Members Virginia Ankney, Carol Nie, John Rogers, Evelyn Morgan, Barbara Poorbaugh and Rose Cupko invite you to join them at 2:30 p.m. the last Saturday of every month at the Dressler Center.

MEAC recognizes outstanding music students

The Somerset Area Music Education Advocate Coalition (MEAC) presented certificates and monetary awards to six students for their outstanding accomplishments in music at the Somerset Area School District Awards Assemblies.

High school senior Sean Gibson and eighth grader Jim deVries were awarded the MEAC All-Around Music Award for high proficiency in music. Three Eagle View Elementary Students received an award as most progressed for the school year at each grade level. They are sixth grader Amber Rouse on French horn, fifth grader Jordyn Miller on flute, and fourth grader Taylor Davis on clarinet. The recipient of the MEAC Most-Over-All Advanced Music Award is sixth grade band member Trevor Zambanini on percussion.
